How Our Garden Grows

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Sept. 12 — Shooting for the big 4 thou! No single-day records broken, but the garden still is putting out the produce! Last Saturday, we picked 589 lbs! Today, we added 154 lbs. and our new total is 3,797 lbs. For sure, we’ll make it to 4,000 lbs. on Saturday! That’s 2 tons!!!

Now that the kids are in school, our midweek volunteer numbers are down…only two of us today and we were picking…and singing… in the rain. We harvested 2 flats of okra, 3 flats of tomatoes, butternut squash, some more watermelons and many Asian melons. Asian melons taste like cantaloupe, but they’re easier to eat. They’re so thin-skinned you can eat the skin too. We had some crazy shaped Armenian cucumbers today. One was practically circular…looked like a neck ring.!! Another looked like a big question mark.?

We did catch the groundhog in the live trap…finally. First, we used an Asian melon as bait, but he wasn’t interested in that. Then we tried a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich and that was the ticket! Everybody loves PB&J! Mr. Groundhog now is living in a wooded area far away from the garden.

The heavy production in the garden is done. The plants have given us practically everything they have to give. Days are getting shorter…we’re losing 3 minutes of daylight every day, and the days are getting cooler. Come october1…most everything is ready for a rest. 20 wks of tending…is plenty.
